APJ Collectables Palissy (Royal Worcester) Plate : Constance
The Palissy Pottery was established 1946, although a number of companies had occupied the pottery site at Longton, Stoke-on-Trent from the middle of the 19th century The Palissy Pottery was bought by the Royal Worcester Porcelain Company in 1958 and continued in operation until 1989.		This striking and unusual plate is 23.5 cm in diameter. Its body is pale cream, shading to a slightly darker shade round the rim. The rim has a relief design of fruits and leaves, with a gilded band round the edge. The design in the centre shows a young woman with a basket of apples beside an apple tree. The design is mainly in relief and hand-painted, with outlining in black. The name of this particular design is ‘Constance’. There were at least three other designs in the series; Penelope, Sarah and Selina, all in costumes of differing periods. I have not been able to trace the name of the artist or any other information about the series. The plate is backstamped (see photo) with ‘Palissy, England, Est. 1853’, with the pattern number 19-1 nearby. As the note to the left shows, the date 1853 is incorrect: the Palissy Pottery was not established until 1946. As the pottery closed in 1989, the plate must have been made between 1946 and 1989: I would guess towards the latter half of that period. There is a little very fine crazing to the side of the plate near the girl’s head and there are two tiny paint spots under the glaze on the rim.
